English is the most widely spoken language in the world. You may want to improve your English for one single reason, e.g. to get a better job, to travel more etc. I love learning foreign languages, that´s why I decided to study English and French in school. In the following post I cover the tips on how to find what’s the best way to learn English. I hope you enjoy reading it!

I Can´t is Forbidden Word

With No, I can´t attitude you are not going to succeed in anything. Negative attitude towards language learning halts the improvement. Try to find a way to stay motivated during your studies. Motivation can be enhanced via interactive games, talking to tutors, having pen-pan friends online. Find your method of studying that suits your needs.

Translate Sentences

Translation has helped me a lot. Translate anything you see or hear. Use social media channels and join conversations there. You can join discussion forums, chats anything.

Listen to Podcasts

You can listen to English conversations online. On my website I create English Lessons with audio recordings. Check it here. Learning via listening can have a positive impact on the development of your communicative skills in English.

Find Chat Friends Online

Having online friends is not impossible if you use the internet and have a phone or a notebook. Last year I discovered the app that translates sentences. It has mistakes but you can actually speak with any language speakers around the globe.

Do not Focus on Mistakes

Your teacher should not punish you every time you make a mistake. Mistakes are a natural process of learning new things. When you feel under pressure, you learn slowly. Consider mistakes as small frog leaps towards English fluency.

Write Down New Words

Make a list of new words you learned. The list should be as long as possible. If you do not know the meaning of a word, look it up in a dictionary. This is another way to memorize new vocabulary effectively. You can either use an online or printed dictionary.

Watch Movies or Your Favorite Tv-Shows

Watch movies you love with subtitles. You can listen to English and read subtitles in your native tongue or you can switch it. Options are various. Netflix offers movies with subtitles in many languages and also multiple dabbing versions.

Join Discussion Groups in Your City

You can join workshops, conferences where the audience can take part in discussions in English. Workshops or conferences are held by foreigners who speak only English, thus you can find plenty of events in your city. Opportunities are multiple.

Find Online Teachers

If neither of tips is appealing to you, you can outsource your tutor online. Language schools offer the flexibility, you may need in times of chaos, turmoil, that our work or personal life creates.

Maybe Visual Learning is The Best Method For You

Some people do not learn fast via listening but visualization. If that is the case, you will learn languages faster via visual learning style. What is visual learning? Visual learners associate new words with pictures. When you hear a word apple do you imagine an apple or you translate it in your head? Maybe both. You see an apple in your mind as you have seen it before. I remember new things via sequence, I have to repeat the word sequence in my head to retrieve the information I need.

Play Online Games

Strategic games not only improve your English but critical thinking skills as well as your logical thinking. Maybe your parents think playing video-games is bad for you but you learn via the storyline of games.

Set Up Daily Routine

Learn every day at least 15minutes and once you feel motivated, you can extend it to 30 minutes or even one hour daily. It is recomended to study at least one hour every day to improve the language faster.

Change Learning Methods

Do not focus on listening all the time or reading. Variety is a good, change learning styles. On Mondays you can listen to podcasts, the other day you can speak with natives. Learning can be passive and active. Passive is when you read or write something. Active means writing or speaking the language. The active process should be of the upmost importance to you!

Learn Sentences Not Words

Words are useless without context. You need contextual learning. For example: the verb ´´get´´ has at least three different meanings. Examples: I get tired fast when She speaks (I am yawning because her talk exhausts me), I get it that you do not want to talk to me anymore (I understand that), I cannot get A+, I will fail my exams ( I cannot obtain A+). From the following examples you can see how many meanings one single word can have. For that reason, it is essential to study new words via reading. Vocabulary drilling is useless if you cannot form sentences correctly.

Learn to Think in English

Whenever you need to look up something on Google, use a translator and search for the information in English. Try to formulate English sentences in your head every day. First attempts will be tough but do not worry. Making mistakes is fine, nobody is perfect. My native tongue is Slovak and it is a shame to admit it but I cannot conjugate some words in Slovak language. My mother tongue is difficult, unlike English which is a simple language.

Final Words

Everyone is unique, different, therefore you have to figure out yourself what’s the best way to learn English for you! For me the translation method worked but it may not be your case.
